And with this in mind, the ceiling spot is invincible since it offers a perfect lighting while improving the decorative aspect of the room where it is installed. As it is possible to install it in any room of the House.

The number of lights to be installed per square meter

Even before choosing the model of fixture for the ceiling to be installed in every room in your House, it is important to know precisely the number of lamps that is suitable for each of them. This is the standard NF EN 12464-1 determines the luminous flux per square meter and that depends essentially on the nature of the piece to illuminate. It is important to note that this luminous flux may be expressed either in lux in lumens (Lm). Moreover, the number of spot ceiling varies depending on whether it is a place of dwelling or of a professional local.

For a home

It takes about 50 lux to illuminate small clearances or closets, against 100 lux in the case of zones of rest, staircases, corridors, garages, Cellars or entrance halls, toilets. As for the rooms, it is necessary to have 100 to 200 lux for optimum brightness. With regard to the dining rooms, bathrooms, lounges and laundries, it takes at least 200 lux for the lighting is sufficient.
This flow should exceed the 300 lux if you wish to illuminate offices, libraries, work areas for ironing or DIY for example, reading corners or even kitchens.
If you plan to install a ceiling light over the work plan of your kitchen or over the mirror in the bathroom, you must focus on a model of spot bathroom that offer a luminous flux between 300 and 500 lux.

For a professional space

It should be noted that it is not only the homes that can take advantage of the benefits offered by the ceiling spot. Indeed, it is also possible to install these lights in business premises so that they can benefit from optimal lighting and an innovative aesthetics. Thus, lobbies, rest rooms, traffic areas, corridors, shops and warehouses must have a light flow of 100 lux minimum.

If it comes to treadmills, stairs or escalators, loading docks, it is necessary to put in place a ceiling lamp that broadcasts at least 150 lux. This value increases to 200 lux for canteens, the locker room, the archives rooms and toilets, or even 300 lux for reception areas, packaging, handling or shipping. Regarding the conference or meeting rooms, the luminous flux must be between 300 and 500 lux. Finally, work stations, treatment rooms and clinics must be informed by lights of at least 500 lux.

Calculation of the number of lamps per m²

Even if it is necessary to know the optimum light output for each piece, this does not give us again the number of lamps should be installed in each of them. To do this, we do a little calculation. In fact, there are three ways to know exactly the number of spots needed for each room.

By the number of lumens for a specific piece

Let's take a specific example to illustrate our calculation. You want to illuminate the corridor of your House which is 8 m². According what we've seen previously, it takes at least a brightness of 100 lux, for example 120 lux. The formula to use is: total lumens = lux x m². What, in our example, gives 120 x 8 = 960 lumens. In other words, we need 960 lumens to illuminate your hallway in an optimal way. Then you have to choose lamps for for your ceiling spot and to divide the light intensity of the light bulb with the 960 lumens. For example, if you opt for a LED GU10 COB 4W of 380 lumens bulb, so you need 960/380 = 2.52 spots. Ultimately, need you at least 3 spotlights to ceiling.

By the number of m² bulb will illuminate

Take the case of a kitchen that has an area of 12 m². According to standard NF EN 12464-1, must be greater than 300 lux brightness, for example 340 lux. You extrapolate the previous formula to calculate square meter illuminated by the light bulb, i.e. m² = lumen/lux. For our example, this will give: 380 / 340 = 1.11. This means that a ceiling with this 380 lumens bulb light will illuminate your kitchen 1 m². To get the number of lamps required to light up this room, simply divide the surface of your kitchen by this figure. What gives 12 / 1 = 12 spots. So you need 12 spots to make your kitchen lit optimally.

By the need for lamps for the room

You already know the number of spot ceiling that you want to install in the room. Similarly, you are in possession of the reference of the bulbs you use on these fixtures. You now you need if your calculations to meet effectively the needs of the room. To illustrate our calculation, we will take the same bulb as before and we plan to install 4 spots. As an example, let's take this time above a bathroom of 10 m² in size.

According to standard NF EN 12464-1, you need a luminous flux of 200 lux minimum for your ceiling spot. You're going to refer to the formula: lumen x number bulb/m² = lux/sqm. Giving to our example: 380 x 4 / 10 = 152 lux/sqm. This result is much lower compared to the 200 lux/m² recommended by the standard. In order to respect this rule, you can either opt for a more powerful bulb or increase the number of your lamps.

The built-in spotlight: a great solution for all

Built-in models are more needed in spot ceiling. It is true that they adapt easily to all parts of the House and they bring a great more decorations. Not to mention that they can be equipped with LED bulbs that are fairly easy to install and allow to reduce your electricity bill by 70 up to 90%. It should be noted that this type of luminaire can very well be installed in the living room, the room of the children or the parents, the kitchen, the corridors, the cellar or the bathroom. In the latter case, it is important to comply with the standard NF C 15-100, which distributes water in 4 volumes.

In this way, the ceiling lamp type that you want to install is essentially depends on the height of the ceiling and the distance that separates it from the receiver of shower or bathtub. But to ensure the safety of those who will be using the bathroom, always give entire electrical installation in this room to a specialist in this area. It is the same for the other rooms in the House, as a professional use reduces the risk of electric shock and short circuit.

Why choose recessed spots?

When we talk about spot ceiling, we immediately think of built-in models. Indeed, they spread the light of ideal way in the room. Besides, this brightness can be oriented to specific locations in the room, which significantly improves the lighting in this one. It is true the recessed lamp in the ceiling turns very discreet all showing an undeniable aesthetic and a more than interesting practical aspect. It is true that it is easy to integrate into a piece of furniture, a ceiling, a corridor, an entry, or even a stairwell. In this case, it can serve as the main light.

Do not hesitate to ingenuity and install inside your closet ceiling light in order to obtain a sufficient lighting to choose your clothing at any time of the day or night. There is also a flat extra spot that operate at very low voltage (TBT) and which therefore will not heat. The case of the latter, to always ensure to associate them with processors that will be placed at a distance of less two meters of the lamp, ideally in a ventilated place. In addition, there are a multitude of forms regarding built-in ceiling light. It can also be equipped or no reflector, while giving you a wide choice regarding the material with which it is made, namely, stainless steel, aluminum or metal. Finally, it can be fixed, adjustable or telescopic.

The benefits of spots on rail

It should be noted that the spot ceiling is not only available in apparent or built-in model. Even if they are more frequently used for professional spaces, models on rail also have their followers. It should be noted that this type of luminaire has the advantage to easily position limits because they are directly installed on a single rail that feeds them electrically.
This is not the case of their built-in counterparts or ceiling lights that always requires a power supply. There is no specific constraint at the time to install these lights on rail because they do not directly come into contact with the ceiling. Moreover, these are generally sold in the form of kits immediately ready to use. They include most of the time the lamps, rails which can have different lengths, a converter or electric connection and finishes.

What are the needs of installation that determine the length of the rails that you will use for the installation of spots on rail. Furthermore, this type of light greatly improves the appearance of the part insofar as you can install it as well in the horizontal, vertical, or curve. Indeed, the electric current is transported inside the fixation on rail, which considerably improves the level of security offered by your installation. It should also be noted that the model rail offers a lighting which is both functional and decorative.

Tips for the installation of these lights

We saw a little higher modes of calculation to find out the number of ceiling spot to use in every room. However, these formulas do not account the height to which you will install your lights nor their angle of lighting. It true that these settings are not so important for domestic use of this type of luminaire. Which is obviously not the case as soon as it is a workshop or a place receiving the public. Only a professional can perform a precise calculation to determine these parameters exactly in order to offer optimal lighting.

Know however that in habitat, the standard height of the ceiling lamp usually revolves around 2.50 m. regarding the spacing between two luminaires, varies it most of the time between 1 and 2 meters at most. In this way, the margin of error in the calculation is trivial and allows you to get a more homogeneous luminous made possible.
